To configure Thunderbird, do the following:

  1. Open Thunderbird.

  1. Hover your cursor over Options and click Account Settings.

  2. Click Account Actions and then select Add Mail Account….
  3. Enter your name in the field labeled Your Name.
  4. Enter your email address in the field labeled Email Address (i.e. yourULID@ilstu.edu).

  1. Enter your ULID password in the field labeled Password, and then click Continue. Configuration found at email provider will appear, but you have to click Manual Config.

Please Note: Thunderbird will automatically try to set up the connection using default configurations, but you will need to click the Manual Config button to enter the correct configuration.

  1. For Incoming Server hostname enter outlook.office365.com,change Port to 993, change SSL to SSL/TLS and Authentication is Normal password.
  2. Enter smtp.office365.com in the Outgoing Server hostname field, change Port to 587, change SSL to STARTTLS and Authentication is Normal password.
  3. Enter your complete email address (i.e. yourULID@ilstu.edu) in the Incoming and Outgoing Username fields.

  1. Click the Re-test button. You should get a message stating, “The following settings were found by probing the given server”.

  1. Click the Done button.
  2. Click OK to close the Account Settings window.

Thunderbird is now configured for use with your Office 365 email account.

Important: All of your folders will not automatically be viewable in Thunderbird. To be able to view all of your folders, see the section below, entitled “How to View Your Folders in Thunderbird”.

Not working? Make sure you entered your email and password correctly and try again. Also, be sure to update the server to outlook.office365.com vs .edu.

How to View Your Folders in Thunderbird

You may view all, or some, of your folders in Thunderbird. In order to do so:

  1. Within Thunderbird, click on your email address, on the left side of the Thunderbird window.
  2. Under Advanced Features, click Manage Folder Subscriptions.
  3. A pop-up window will open, entitled Subscribe, which will display all of the existing folders for your email account. Place a check to the right of any folders you would like to be able to view within Thunderbird.

Note: You will need to click the arrows to the left of any expandable folders in order to be able to view and select any sub-folders for subscription.

  1. Once you have selected all of the folders you would like to be able to view, click Subscribe > OK.

You will now see the selected folders underneath your email address within Thunderbird.

Important: The new folders will not automatically populate with your email messages. When you click on a folder to view the contents, Thunderbird will then sync your email for the selected folder.

Step 1: Save Thunderbird Email to Windows PC

  • First, create a new folder in Desktop.
  • Next, launch the Thunderbird application on the system.
  • After that, open the message folder where you need to move emails from Thunderbird to MS Outlook are saved.
  • Then, select all the messages using the Ctrl+A key.
  • Now, Right-click on the messages and select Save As option.
  • Finally, Browse to the desktop folder land save the emails there.

Step 2: Import EML to Office 365

  • First, launch the Outlook email application.
  • Now, go to the folder in Outlook where the Thunderbird messages will be saved.
  • Or, select the Folder tab and select the New Folder option.
  • In the Create New folder dialogue box, set a name for the new folder.
  • After that, click on the OK button to migrate Thunderbird email to Office 365.
  • Now, this folder will see on the left panel of the email application.
  • Next, click on the Folder to open its content on the center panel.
  • Finally, drag all the messages from the Desktop folder to this folder in Outlook.

Method 2. Forward As Attachments

  • Open the Mozilla Thunderbird on a Windows PC.
  • Then, select the messages that need to be imported from Thunderbird to the O365 account.
  • After that, right-click on them and select Forward as Attachment.
  • You will encounter a new email window in which emails with be added as EML attachments.
  • Next, type in an email ID to migrate MBOX to Office 365.
  • Then, click on the Send button.
  • When the process is finished, view the Thunderbird emails on Office 365 Mail App.

Verify the migrating process by logging into the O365 and opening each email one at a time through a browser in EML format.

Limitations of Migrating Thunderbird Email To Office 365 Manually

  • Limited to Some Emails: The process to transfer Thunderbird emails to Exchange Online is not meant to move the complete email folder containing over 1000 emails. It can only export some important conversations.
  • Lengthy Process: It may take a lot of time in moving each email one at a time to desktop and then to Outlook.
  • Time-Consuming: Forwarding hundreds of Thunderbird messages to Office 365 with large attachment files may take a lot of time.
